Surrendering or Rehoming Your Pet

Misfit Mutts receives many requests from community members who must surrender their beloved pets. We wish we could take them all. But, as a foster-based rescue group, it’s just not possible.

Keep Your Pet

For suggestions to help owners keep their pets instead of surrendering them, please visit:

Use Social Media

The power of social media is endless. Posting a notice on Nextdoor (nextdoor.com or the Nextdoor app) is a good local resource to rehome a pet or find a lost pet. Remember to always charge an adoption/rehoming fee of at least $50, screen potential adopters and ask for references. Please do not put “free to good home.” Anyone who wants to adopt your pet must have the financial resources to care for them for the rest of their lives.

Also, a friend of a friend on Facebook, X or Instagram may not be able to pass up the adorable photo of your pet. You never know who may be looking for that perfect companion animal.

Advertise

You can place an ad in local papers but remember to charge an adoption/rehoming fee of at least $50. Please do not put “free to good home.” Anyone who wants to adopt your pet must have the financial resources to care for them for the rest of their lives.

‍If all attempts to find a home for your pet are unsuccessful, the Sacramento SPCA accepts owner-surrender animals through a Managed Admission process.  More information is available at Managed Admission – Sacramento SPCA [https://www.sspca.org/post/managed-admission].
