Fostering
Fostering is a critical step in our rescue efforts. As a foster-based organization, Misfit Mutts Dog Rescue is always looking for safe, loving foster homes. Being a foster is a deeply rewarding experience that involves welcoming a homeless dog (or even two) into your home and providing them with care, affection and socialization. As a foster parent, you’re not just offering a temporary home. You’re giving a dog a chance at a new beginning.
If you are interested in opening your home and heart to a dog in need, please fill out the Dog Foster Application. A Misfit Mutts volunteer will respond in three to five days.
What are the responsibilities of a foster family?
The most important responsibility is to provide a safe, clean and caring environment for the dog in your care. This includes regular exercise and socialization to help them adjust and thrive. Foster parents may also be required to administer medications as directed by the veterinarian. Fostering often involves transporting your rescue dog to adoption events, veterinary appointments and grooming.
How long does it take for the dog to be adopted?
The length of time a dog spends in a foster home can vary, ranging from just one week to several months, depending on medical and socialization needs, personality and age. Since each rescue dog is different, every foster experience will be different. Foster parents are expected to care for the dog until adopted. However, we understand circumstances can change, and Misfit Mutts will make every effort to move the dog to another foster home if required.
Can I choose my foster dog or does Misfit Mutts choose for me?
Misfit Mutts receives a daily list of at-risk dogs who need rescue from local animal shelters. Misfit Mutts sends the list to foster parents who are ready to take in a foster dog. The foster parent will set up a time to visit the dog at the shelter to determine, in consultation with a lead Misfit Mutts volunteer, if the dog is a good match for the foster family.
What does Misfit Mutts provide the foster family?
Misfit Mutts provides everything your foster dog needs to feel comfortable and cared for, including medical care, food, treats, beds, toys, collar, harness, leash, puppy pads and any other essentials. All we ask is that foster parents provide the love, patience, socialization and care the dogs need while waiting for their forever homes.
Why is fostering a good choice for me?
Introducing a foster dog into your home can be rewarding for you and your family. For children, fostering is a wonderful way to teach responsibility, selflessness and empathy toward animals, as well as learn about the care and needs of pets. Best of all, fostering can be a great way to “test” the idea of adding a permanent dog to your family in the future. Yes, it’s ok if you end up adopting your foster dog!
